What is a DOTA PET-CT Scan?

DOTA PET-CT scan is an advanced imaging test which combines two technologies: PET and CT.

PET detects metabolic activity, and CT provides detailed anatomical images. Also known as Gallium-68 DOTA PET-CT is designed to detect Neuroendocrine Tumours. In this scan, a tiny amount of Gallium-68 radiotracer is injected into the body, somatostatin receptors. This enables doctors to detect primary tumours and metastatic lesions throughout the body.

We are partnered with diagnostic centres having modern PET-CT scanners, providing high-resolution imaging for accurate diagnosis. With us, patient get quick appointments and quality reports.

Why Do Doctors Recommend a DOTA PET-CT Scan?

Doctors usually recommend a DOTA PET-CT scan when a Neuroendocrine Tumour is suspected or already diagnosed. Common reasons include:

  • Diagnosis of Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs)
  • Carcinoid Tumours
  • Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumours (PNET)
  • Small bowel NETs
  • Lung Neuroendocrine Tumours
  • Unknown primary NET
  • Staging of Neuroendocrine Tumours
  • Detection of recurrent disease

Is a DOTA PET-CT Scan Safe?

Yes. A DOTA PET CT scan is a safe diagnostic tool, when performed under appropriate medical supervision.

The scan requires a small dose of radioactive tracer (Gallium-68), which quickly decays naturally and is eliminated from the body in a short period. Medical justification for the radiation exposure is met and the exposure is well below accepted limits.

The scan is only done after your treating doctor or oncologist evaluates you. All our partner centres follow established radiation safety protocols and international nuclear medicine guidelines.

Always tell the doctor if you are pregnant or nursing

Preparing for a DOTA PET-CT Scan?

Before the scan:

  • Bring your doctor’s prescription.
  • Bring your previous PET-CT, CT, MRI, ultrasound, blood test reports, and discharge summaries, if available.
  • Make sure that the centre is notified of your pregnancy or breastfeeding status.
  • Tell the doctor if you are taking any other medications.
  • Inform staff if you suffer from diabetes or kidney problems.
  • Dress in loose, comfortable clothes.
  • Avoid wearing jewellery or metal accessories.
  • There is no strict rule on the need to fast for this type of PET scan as it varies with the protocol used by the diagnostic centre. Always do as you are told when you’re booking an appointment.

After arrival:

  • The Gallium-68 tracer will be injected.
  • You will be asked to rest comfortably for approximately 45–60 minutes while the tracer is absorbed by your body.
  • The actual PET-CT scan typically takes about 20 – 30 minutes.

After the scan:

  • Drink plenty of water after the scan to help eliminate the tracer from your body.
  • Return to normal activities unless otherwise directed.
  • Do not have prolonged close contact with babies and pregnant women for a few hours as directed by the centre.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A DOTA PET-CT scan is recommended to diagnose neuroendocrine tumours, assess the stage of cancer, for recurrence after treatment, for recurrence in another organ, and for assessing the suitability of a patient for PRRT therapy.

One of the most precise imaging methods available for NET patients.

Preparation is usually easy. Bring previous medical records, your doctor’s prescription and tell staff if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, allergic, taking medication, or have any other medical conditions; and ensure you follow any fasting or medication guidelines given by the diagnostic centre. Loose, comfortable clothes are also advised.

The actual imaging will last about 20 to 30 minutes, but the full appointment will require about 2 to 3 hours to complete, including registration, tracer injection, time of uptake, imaging and observation.

The scan will not cause any pain, except for the injection of the radioactive tracer. While scanning, all you have to do is lie still on the scanning table as the PET-CT machine displays detailed images.

The procedure is comfortable and tolerated by most patients.

Yes. The normal CT scan will reveal structural changes, while a DOTA PET-CT will detect tumour activity at the molecular level.

This helps doctors to identify neuroendocrine tumours much earlier – and with far greater accuracy – particularly when there is no sign of them in a normal-looking conventional scan.

The time to receive patients’ reports depends on the diagnostic centre’s reporting system, but usually it takes 1-2 hours. When a medical emergency occurs, there may be expedited reporting as well.
